Text Message Opt-In Documentation

This page documents the complete opt-in process for notify-u's text message notification service as it appears to customers at participating businesses.

Section 1

Overview

notify-u is a paper ticket notification system for local businesses such as auto repair shops, dry cleaners, and tailors. When a customer drops off an item, staff attach a paper ticket. The customer can opt in to receive a single text message when their item is ready for pickup.

All messages are transactional — one pickup notification per ticket. notify-u does not send marketing, promotional, or recurring messages.

Opt-in occurs through one of two methods described below.

Section 2

Opt-In Methods

Case 1 Verbal opt-in — associate-assisted

At drop-off, the associate asks the customer if they would like a text notification when their item is ready. If the customer agrees, the associate writes the customer's phone number on the ticket. The associate then directs the customer to an in-store QR code to complete enrollment via the web form.

Before or at the time of collecting the phone number, the associate verbally communicates the following disclosures to the customer:

Required verbal disclosures
  • Service description: "notify-u will send you one text message when your item is ready for pickup."
  • Frequency: "You'll receive one message per ticket."
  • Rates: "Message and data rates may apply."
  • Opt-out: "You can reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe."
  • Explicit consent: The customer must verbally confirm they wish to receive the notification before the associate records their number.

The customer then scans the in-store QR code and submits their phone number on the web form to complete enrollment. The associate may assist by entering the number on the form if the customer is unable to do so themselves, with the customer's explicit consent.

Case 2 QR code opt-in — customer self-service

The customer is given a paper ticket that has a QR code printed on it. The QR code links directly to the opt-in web form for that specific ticket. The customer scans the code at their convenience and enters their phone number to subscribe.

The ticket and surrounding materials display all required disclosures alongside the QR code (see Section 3). The web form itself reinforces the purpose before the customer submits. No associate involvement is required for this method.

Section 3

QR Code on Paper Ticket

The QR code links to the opt-in web form for the specific ticket. The text surrounding the QR code on the ticket clearly identifies notify-u, describes the service, states the message frequency, and includes opt-out and rates disclosures.

Section 4

Opt-In Web Form

Scanning the QR code opens a mobile-optimized web form. The customer enters their 10-digit phone number and taps Notify me. No account or app is required. The form is tied to one ticket — the token in the QR code URL links the phone number to that ticket only.

The heading and body copy state the purpose before the customer submits: they will receive one text message when their item is ready for pickup.
